Google Groups are similar to a mailing list and could be used for a particular class or year group as a way to communicate and share resources with each other easily. There are different options available when setting up a Google Group, such as a simple email list or a web forum, where users could log in to see ongoing discussions, similar to a discussion board. This could be used as an alternative to the Yorkshare discussion board tool, if your students feel more comfortable with the Google interface.
A Google Group would have its own email address and any emails sent to the group’s address would be sent to everyone who was subscribed to the group.
