Got a new module to teach and looking for ideas? Want to revisit an established module to make it more “student focussed”?  The Academic Support Office will soon re-launch their series of workshops and online resources to inform, inspire and help to plan successful, innovative modules and consider how technology can be used to support student learning.

Building on the successes of last year’s series, resources and workshops have been redeveloped with input from academics from across the institution, to place more emphasis on helping you make practical hands-on design decisions, while retaining inspirational examples of innovative uses of technology and module design.

The series addresses three themes, including assessment and feedback and learner engagement, though the first theme will explore the fundamental concepts of student focussed module design and provide participants with a solid grounding for their subsequent design decisions. This will be delivered through a blend of online activities and resources, and a face to face workshop running on 20th March. It may be possible for colleagues who are interested in participating in the series but cannot attend the first face to face session to complete the activities wholly online through the VLE.  While individuals will be warmly welcome, teaching teams are particularly encouraged to attend. To emphasise the practical nature of the series, participants are requested from the outset to identify a module that they are contributing to and will be able to work on throughout the series.

By the end of the opening theme, participants will be able to:

  • Define the context and constraints of your module
  • Develop effective learning outcomes that can be aligned to activities, assessment and evaluation
  • Start the development of an evaluation plan for your module
  • Apply a framework for technology enhanced learning to a module that they are teaching

Subsequent hands-on sessions (17th April / 15th May) will provide attendees with the opportunity to make design decisions about a module that they are teaching on in one of the two remaining themes; Assessment and Feedback or Learner engagement.

More information on the whole series is available here;, please don’t hesitate to get in touch ( to book your place or for any queries, including how the series could be customised for delivery to a specific a department or teaching team.
